Vintage and eco-friendly… these unique soy candles brought to us by Waverly and Irving are quite a treat!

Vintage is lovely in its own right but if you’re not familiar with soy, here’s why you should be: they last about 50% longer than petroleum-based paraffin, burn slower and cooler (key for distributing fragrance), are non-toxic and less likely to trigger allergies, and produce very little soot!

Candles and I have had a checkered past, chock-full of headaches and allergic reactions… but these candles have been nothing but pleasant.  Tested and approved!

BONUS: Once you’ve burned the candle to your little heart’s content you still have the antique glassware to enjoy for years to come!

The goal of this project is to bring awareness to the millions of species that are under threat because of climate change. I created 26 different cards with various endangered species. Each animal card is depicted with its own abstract representation symbolizing the departure of the unrecoverable beauty of these species.

This American Life touches on the harsh reality of environmental activism…

Ira Glass: “Once someone is skeptical of this and they see it as a he said, she said argument, is it possible to ever get through to them?”

Roberta Johnson: “Well, we’re certainly going to keep trying….”

ARCADE FIRE - “SPRAWL II (MOUNTAINS BEYOND MOUNTAINS)”:

They heard me singing and they told me to stop
Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock
These days my life, I feel it has no purpose
But late at night the feelings swim to the surface

‘Cause on the surface the city lights shine
They’re calling at me, come and find your kind
Sometimes I wonder if the world’s so small
That we can never get away from the sprawl

Living in the sprawl
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains
And there’s no end in sight
I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights

We rode our bikes to the nearest park
Sat under the swings and kissed in the dark
We shield our eyes from the police lights
We run away, but we don’t know why

And like a mirror, the city lights shine
They’re screaming at us, “We don’t need your kind”
Sometimes I wonder if the world’s so small
That we can never get away from the sprawl

Living in the sprawl
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains
And there’s no end in sight
I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights

They heard me singing and they told me to stop
Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock
Sometimes I wonder if the world’s so small
Can we ever get away from the sprawl?

Living in the sprawl
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains
And there’s no end in sight
I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights

I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights

Our task must be to free ourselves… by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.

Look deep into the eyes of any animal, and then for a moment, trade places, their life becomes as precious as yours and you become as vulnerable as them. Now smile if you believe all animals deserve our respect and our protection, for in a way, they are us, and we are them.

Last week on RadioLab, I was touched by the story of Lucy - a chimp taken from her mother shortly after birth and raised by a family, as a HUMAN, for the purpose of a psychology “experiment.”

I think we can all predict the ending to this story is not be a happy one.  It illustrates the sentience of animals and our limited perception of this emotion due to language barriers or sheer disconnect from the natural world.  Respect, for all life, is not only crucial for the health of our planet, but also the prosperity of the human race.

I encourage you all to listen to this unbelievable story.
