SAVING WHILE SURFING

I first heard of this AMAZING idea while on another site I’m obsessed with, TED.com. Meandering through TED’s engrossing array of videos led me to “Tim Jackson’s economic reality check”. Tim discussed the true meaning of prosperity, social human behavior in conflict with economic systems, and new innovations in eco-business (or eco-nomy as I like to call it). His example of an eco-business making a difference? ECOSIA.ORG!

This is VERY EXCITING and here’s why…

Ecosia is an eco-friendly Internet search engine that gives at least 80% of its advertising revenue to a rainforest protection program run by the WWF.

Ecosia users can save about two square meters of rainforest with every search they do – without paying ANYTHING. Furthermore, all Ecosia servers run on green electricity, so they do not cause any CO2 emissions. By using Ecosia, you can turn your Web search green!

I LOVE this idea for two reasons:

  1. It’s GENIUS! Think about it. Everyone’s “googling” all the time - “What’s the name of that movie where that guy does that thing?… Google it!” It takes a minute to install Ecosia in your toolbar and DONE. You’re simply carrying on with your every day activities but NOW you’re also saving precious rainforest. That’s a lot of good for very little change (or dollars) on your part. PERFECTION!
  2. It’s the RAINFOREST! Talk about bang for your [non-]buck! The rainforest is not only the MOST important forest for carbon sequestration (fighting global climate change, cleaning our air, etc.), but it also harbors more biodiversity than anywhere else in the world! In short, the rainforest is absolutely paramount for the health of our planet and it needs our help!

But uh… Here’s the thing…

The amount of rainforest we protect depends on the number of people who use Ecosia! The more users we have, the more rainforest we protect. It’s that simple. Every new Ecosia user saves about 2,000m² (2,392yd²) each year!

Together we really can make a difference, so please help to spread the word about ECOSIA.ORG! E-mail a friend, “like” it on Facebook, tweet about it…. You know the drill.
